  • Threatens legal action

By Mohammed Kandi

The Federal Character Commission (FCC) has accused the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) of violating employment guidelines, calling for the immediate halt to the on-going recruitment of lawyers, engineers and allied professionals, failing of which the former might institute a legal action against the later.
The FCC reaction followed the alleged violation of its guidelines and formulae by and the refusal of the NDDC to forward to the Commission lists of the applicants for the monitoring of the selection tests and recruitment interviews.
In a statement by its Director of Legal and Prosecution, Mr. M.O. Odusanya, the FCC alleged that the staff distribution pattern of the NDDC is “heavily tilted in favour of the indigenes of a few states of the Federation to the detriment of the overwhelming majority of the others, which is a clear violation of the provisions of both the Nigerian Constitution and the Federal Character Commission’s Enabling Act.”
It directed the management of the NDDC to immediately discontinue with the on-going recruitment exercise pending a meeting with the Petroleum and Environment Committee of the FCC scheduled for Thursday, May 24.
The FCC insists that the Managing Director and the Executive Director in charge of staff matters be in attendance at the meeting.
It lamented that while the current recruitment exercise offers an opportunity “to commence the process of redressing the existing imbalance, your management appears unwilling to do so, thereby committing an offence contrary to Section 14(3)(b) and punishable under Section 15(1) of the Commission’s Enabling Act”.
The equal opportunity commission also drew the attention of the NDDC to the statutory regulation which empowers it to enforce its directives, citing paragraph 8(1) of Section C, Part I, Third Schedule to the Constitution which directs it to “take such legal measures, including the prosecution of the head or staff of any Ministry or Government body or Agency which fails to comply with any Federal Character Principle or Formula prescribed or adopted by the Commission.”

written by Nello, May 19, 2012
Federal character in what? What did they contribute to nigeria state economically rather than waiting niger delta crude oil and gas monies to be share on monthly, can a niger delta man control cattle market in potiskom in yobe state? It high time we stick our neck out to fiscal federalism and create wealth everywhere in nigeria rather than waiting for niger delta crude oil and gas money alone, agriculture can create more wealth and jobs than oil and gas,let every states in nigeria seek ways of generating it own revenue and pay royalties to the center, this will boost the nation economy massively, the northern nigeria should be proactive and allow fiscal federalism to come to stay.Nigeria will never achieve it vision 20-2020 with this feeding bottle approch to federalism. The year 2020 is just 8 years away.On fiscal federalism we stand.
