Subsidy probe: House, cabal and the rest of us

Since the House of Representatives adopted the report of the Farouk Lawan committee which probed the alleged mismanagement of the subsidy scheme and indicted some top government officials and some oil companies, Nigerians have been waiting to see if the legislature can take the next bold step to get its well applauded recommendations implemented by the executive, which members were found wanting.

The National Assembly has been in the news mainly because of the submission of the report of the Farouk Lawan House of Representatives committee which probed the management of subsidy scheme in which damning revelations were made indicting some top government officials and oil companies.

The two chambers of the National Assembly resumed plenary on Tuesday with the committee resuming sitting on various on-going probes including those on aviation as well as administration of pension by the Senate and that of the Capital Market by the House of Representatives.

Of the three arms of government, the legislature is the actual symbol of democracy. This is basically because it is always peopled by individuals elected from remote constituencies that make up the federation, who have the mandate to speak for their people on issues agitating their minds and who also could be recalled by the people they represent.
