Why we’ll dialogue with Boko Haram, by Azazi

Nigerian security services are considering making contact with moderate members of shadowy Islamist sect Boko Haram via “back channels”, even though explicit talks are officially ruled out, the national security adviser said on Friday.

Speaking a day after emergency meetings with President Goodluck Jonathan and top security officials in response to a spate of deadly Christmas Day bombings by the sect, National Security Adviser General Owoye Andrew Azazi told Reuters officials were looking at broadening efforts beyond pure security measures — including addressing northern economic grievances.

The storm raised by the Christmas Day  bombings, especially the attack on St. Theresa's Catholic Church, Madalla, near Abuja, appears to be far from settling as more Nigerians from the different religious divides across the country continue to voice anger over the incidents. Already, Christian leaders like Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor have reacted in the bitterest of manners, almost going wild and threatening to throw the country into a state of war if there's any violent attack on Christians by Boko Haram. Other Christian leaders such Reverend Saidu Dogo, a leader of CAN in the 19 northern states also threatened to avenge any further attacks on Christians.

Though the year 2011 has come and gone, but not without a mention of a number of unfortunate incidences, especially serial bombings which is /and still threatening the nation’s soul. Activities of the Boko Haram Islamist sect which seemed to have dwarfed all efforts aimed at getting to its roots remained a monster with over 500 lives lost and property worth millions of naira lost in the last 12 months.
