Oshodi now calm after bloody clashes

From James Sani Swam, Lagos

Calm and normalcy have returned to Oshodi, a suburb in Isolo Local Government Area of Lagos State where violence broke out Monday between two factions of the Nigerian Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW). The fracas claimed one life, while  many persons sustained injuries.

Lagos State Police Spokesperson Frank Mba told Peoples Daily that “swift intervention from the police helped to douse tension,” adding: “presently the crisis has been nipped in the bud and so there is no cause for alarm.”

He said it was a minor misunderstanding between two rival factions struggling for power and control of the area, noting however, that some members of the NURTW were arrested and were in police custody.

Nigeria is the so called gaint of Africa but over time we as a country have
disappointed the rest of the world in many areas best known to them. We need to
be careful because accepting something simple because it is a dominant and
hegemonic view is the greatest threat to progess

by God, Allah, Oluwa,Chineke, what ever your own godly orientation is, why in
this blue heavens are we fighting amongst our poverty stricken selves.

very
few even uneducated fat cats are looting and lavishing nigerian wealth, and yet
poor fools have the energy to fight and kill themselves. you have this amount of
anger and resolve to fight and kill, wouldn't it be better if we pry nigeria out
from the hands of this hoodlums who said they are leaders and continuously
enslave us including those who fought and killed someone and for what?

@ Daniels, good talk! Nigerians are funny people and majority of us are
stupid and foolish. Every idiot wants to enslave the already impoverished
people. If only that energy and anger can be directed towards the eggheads who
call themselves leaders, I believe things will change for the better.

You spoke well brother Daniel. It is in deed a shame that in this 21st century
people resort to such barbaric acts while the fat cats keep looting the nation.
Just like crabs in a bucket, the bottom feeders keep pulling each other down. No
body protest against no electricity, nobody protest against no water, nobody
protest against no security, nobody protest against bribery, police extortion on
the freeways, kidnapping, poor infrastructure, dangerous roads - I mean all the
ills in world - nothing good politically, socially and what-have- still nobody
protest. We walk around like zombies, beating our chest like we are somebody.
The few fat cats politicians loot and rape our beloved country! When are we
going to wake up? We chase rats when our home is on fire. We fight the wrong
battle; we go about life wrongly, bury our head in the sand hoping for a better
tomorrow. We are a disgrace to humanity as a whole but particularly to bla...

What is happening at the presidency is very disturbing indeed. Would it surprise
anyone if the army suddenly took over the reins of government citing this as an
excuse? First we are said to be deceived about the president's whereabout. Now
we hear the chief justice can only be sworn in by the president. Now the budget
was not actually signed by the president. Are we governed by children or what?

The continuing recognition of NURTW by goverment has to stop. Encourage more
private garages, and this useless rogues will in no time disappear. Anyone that
wishes to join the union will register and make contribution to them, for them
to fight for him/her in case of problems with employer. They will eventually die
of natural death.
