The flash-point that Jos has become and the various communal skirmishes in various parts of the country over ownership of land are indications of the various ramifications of the economic and political determinism of the indigene-settler conflict. It often revolves around the question : Who owns the land and by extension, whose will should be dominant ? It must be pointed out that ruptures generally occur in indigene-settler relations when settlers begin to gain economic and political ascendancy, accompanied by arrogance, which lead to resentment among the natives.

The military in countries like Turkey and Pakistan have played significant roles in government and administration at different times, for different reasons. While these countries are now enjoying the benefits of democracy despite limitations, the military in Nigeria, having relinquished the bullet as the weapon of choice to gain power, have converted the ballot to a far more effective weapon for power requisition. They always claim to seize power for patriotic reasons, but once in office, end up as corrupt and as power-hungry as the civilians they overthrew.

We must give credit to Obasanjo for two things. He knows how to use power. He also enjoys the crude use of power in the style of our medieval rulers who held sway in Africa before the advent of colonial rule.

In recent times, vociferous advocates, seeking repudiation of indigene-ship and agitating for super-imposition of citizenship, have been having a field day in a rather myopic campaign to turn history on its head. The latest Jos mayhem of March 7, 2010 was yet another opportunity for these citizenship irredentists to rubbish indigene-ship.
