I have met the Minister of State (Power), Arc Nuhu Somo Wya, only once. I had gone to his home in Asokoro in 2008 in the company of a friend who was worried over a report in one of the national dailies alleging the minister’s involvement in the multi-billion Naira contract scam rocking the Rural Electricity Agency (REA). Nearly after an hour of waiting for him, a car pulled up at the gate. The only ministerial sign around him was the presence of a policeman who held his bag and was leading the way.

Their rhetorical ammunition now apparently exhausted, the government of Plateau state last week unleashed a big shift in their handling of their very terrible crises beginning with what clearly appears to be a genuine search for peace. In a move that surely promises to yield peace dividend, the state’s security council led by the Secretary to the State government (SSG), Mr. Jidauna Samson Dimka moved to Kaduna, leading a team of Plateau state officials for an important meeting to under-study the peace efforts of the neighbouring state.

We do not know if the organised visits to ailing President Umaru Yar’adua by both Muslim and Christian clerics were a one-off, or only the beginning in a series of visits by groups to the Villa. If the latter, we do not know who is next on the line. Neither do we have any idea when and if the Acting President, and the National Assembly and other leaders will have their turns. The president’s close aides are playing the game close to their chest.
