One notable feature of Nigerian English is the predilection for adding plural forms to nouns that don’t normally admit of them in Standard English. This is certainly a consequence of the inability of many Nigerian speakers and writers of the English language to keep up with the quirky, illogical irregularities that are so annoyingly typical of the conventions of English grammar.

Cartelopia is an incredible country. Underline incredible: meaning hard to believe, farfetched or absurd even. After GSM operating licences were first issued in 2001 at the outlandish cost of $285 million to foreign companies such as Multiple Telephony Network (MTN) we gasped at the amounts but left the details to the regulators and legislators in charge. All we wanted was a chance to be able to talk with each other and to friends and family abroad.

I had gone to his home in Asokoro in 2008 in the company of a friend who was worried over a report in one of the national dailies alleging the minister’s involvement in the multi-billion Naira contract scam rocking the Rural Electricity Agency (REA). Nearly after an hour of waiting for him, a car pulled up at the gate. The only ministerial sign around him was the presence of a policeman who held his bag and was leading the way.

In a move that surely promises to yield peace dividend, the state’s security council led by the Secretary to the State government (SSG), Mr. Jidauna Samson Dimka moved to Kaduna, leading a team of Plateau state officials for an important meeting to under-study the peace efforts of the neighbouring state.

It must be pointed out that ruptures generally occur in indigene-settler relations when settlers begin to gain economic and political ascendancy, accompanied by arrogance, which lead to resentment among the natives.

 The military in countries like Turkey and Pakistan have played significant roles in government and administration at different times, for different reasons. While these countries are now enjoying the benefits of democracy despite limitations, the military in Nigeria, having relinquished the bullet as the weapon of choice to gain power, have converted the ballot to a far more effective weapon for power requisition. They always claim to seize power for patriotic reasons, but once in office, end up as corrupt and as power-hungry as the civilians they overthrew.
