Nigeria, long regarded as the key to wiping out polio in Africa, is finally making some huge gains in the battle against Polio so breaking the transmission is finally a reality. Except for 2007, Nigeria had the highest number of cases globally from 2003 to 2008. Nigeria has dropped to the 7th position, with only one reported case this year so far. As at the first quarter of last year, 50 cases had been reported of the 388 total for the year. This can be attributed to the vigorous backing of vaccinations by prominent religious leaders.
