Extinction threat for world’s most miserable animal - the blobfish

E-mail Print PDF

No wonder he looks like the world’s most miserable fish... this unattractive creature, the inedible blobfish, is in danger of being wiped out.

These sad-looking creatures, which grow up to lengths of 12 inches, live at depths of 900m.

They spend most of their time gently floating around waiting for food to pass in front of them, which sounds like quite a nice life to us!

Because they live so far from the sea surface they’re not often seen by humans.

However, increasing levels of deep-sea fishing in Australia and Tasmania for crab and lobster mean that the sulky sea-dwellers are being dragged up with other catches in increasing numbers.

These gelatinous masses may not be much to look at, but the world would be a less interesting place without them, probably, so let’s hope the Australians don’t kill them off.

Green-fingered Roger and Valerie Holley have clipped two trees into the shape of a giant Christmas pudding, complete with a giant robin perched on top.

It took the Holleys six years to prune the evergreens into the perfectly round shape it is today and just a fortnight to create the huge robin that sits on top of it eating a berry.

Santas rob supermarket at gunpoint

Two men dressed as Father Christmas help up a               supermarket in Berlin this week, making off with a bag of loot all to themselves.

The seasonal criminals donned Santa Claus outfits before storming the supermarket in the German capital on Monday.

Police said in a statement: ‘They didn’t look like they were going to be passing out any presents when they came in.’

When a sales assistant asked the pair to take of their Christmas disguises, one of the Santas pulled out a gun and demanded money from her and her colleague.

Neither sales assistant was hurt, but the evil Santas managed to escape with the money.

Unfortunately gun-wielding Santas seems to be an annual occurrence at Christmas.

Last year a man dressed as Father Christmas robbed a bank in Tennessee, demanding money from a teller at gunpoint.

After the money had been handed over to the robber he explained that ‘Santa needed to pay his elves.’

These incredible turkeys could brighten up anyone’s Christmas dinner — after being dyed garish bright colours by their owners.

The barmy birds have had their normal drab feathers transformed into neon colours using harmless food dyes.

The turkeys are part of the Gozzi Turkey Farm Christmas celebrations in Guilford, Connecticut, and are dyed using a ‘secret’ technique.

Gozzi Turkey Farms has been dying the turkeys for about 50 years.

They sell fresh turkeys for both the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays and has become a local attraction.
