National Assembly members are divided over the status of the 1999 constitution (first amendment) following the insistence of some lawmakers that the amended constitution be reworked and sent to President Goodluck Jonathan for assent as ordered by the Lagos High Court.

A Special Assistant to the Niger state governor on Youth Mobilisation, Mohammed Isah Yandabwagi, has been arrested by the police for duping a Kaduna based businessman over N24 million under the pretext of influencing the award of a N500 million contract to him.

 

Saudi Arabia deports HIV-positive Nigerian pilgrim

A 33-year-old female Nigerian pilgrim has been deported back home by the Saudi authorities for being HIV positive.

The pilgrim was said to have been screened by doctors on arrival at the King AbdulAzeez International Airport clinic, in Jeddah and was subsequently, deported back on the next flight to Nigeria .

This was confirmed yesterday in Jeddah by the head of Nigeria ’s medical team in Mecca Dr. Ibrahim Kana.

 

Furore over CAN’s position on North’s consensus candidate

The Christian Association of Nigeria, (CAN), Kaduna chapter has found itself mired in controversy over its position on the North’s yet-to-be announced consensus candidate.

People’s Daily  gathered that when the Adamu-Ciroma led consensus committee requested to meet with Christian and Muslim religious groups in the North as part of their consultations, the Christian Association of Nigeria, (CAN), Kaduna chapter,  appointed a powerful delegation to represent them. The CAN’s head of delegation was their Bauchi state Chairman, Pastor Habu Aminchi.

 

Tafida calls for policy shift, budget implementation in education sector

Dr Dalhatu Tafida, Nigeria ’s High Commissioner to the U.K, has called for a paradigm shift in policy making and budget implementation in the education sector.  

Tafida made the remarks at the inaugural conference of the Association of Nigerian Academics (ANAUK) with the theme: “Democracy and education in Nigeria : What hope for the current and future generations?’’ at the weekend in London.

The Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) has said that Nigeria has not made appreciable gains in the fight against corruption, in spite of the concerted efforts against the vice by anti-corruption agencies.

 

Sokoto loses three pilgrims in Saudi Arabia

Sokoto state lost three of its pilgrims in Mecca, Dr Jabbi Kilgore, head of the medical team, said yesterday.

Kilgore confirmed that the deceased had been buried according to Islamic rites.

He said two of the dead pilgrims, Danma Isa and Mohammad Labbo, were from Gwadabawa local government while the third, Ibrahim Huchi, was from Kware local government.

 

Peace Corps petitions IG over alleged proscription

The Peace Corps of Nigeria, a uniformed youth organisation, has petitioned the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Hafiz Ringim, over the alleged proscription of the organization contrary to existing court orders.

 The organization has consequently, given the police a seven-day ultimatum to obey the court order.

Jonathan describes advocates of consensus candidacy as empty barrels

The President Goodluck Jonathan / Namadi Sambo campaign organisation has described advocates of a Northern presidential aspirant on the basis of consensus, religion or tribe for the 2011 general elections as empty barrels who have nothing to offer Nigerians.
