Noise pollution can lead to hypertension, madness, says expert

An Abuja based medical practitioner, Dr Nse Akpan, has warned the public against the high rate of noise pollution in the urban centres.

 Akpan, who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), yesterday, in Abuja, said the warning became imperative in view of the noise resulting from electric generators in residential areas, markets, churches and office buildings.

 

425 communities ‘open defecation free’ in Nigeria

No fewer than 425 communities have been declared Open Defecation Free (ODF) in the country, the Chairman, sub-technical Committee on Water Supply and Quality Control, Mr Usang Bassey, said, yesterday, in Jos, the Plateau state capital. 

Bassey told the National Technical Commitee on Water Resources, meeting in Jos, that the declaration was as a result of the Community-Led Total Sanitation (CTLS) programme being implemented in the country.

 

Lake Nyos: FG marshals plans to contain emergency

 

The Federal Government is working out ”robust’’ plans to deal with any unforeseen emergency in the event of the collapse of Lake Nyos in Cameroun.

The Minister of Water Resources, Chief Obadiah Ando, gave the assurance, recently, in Abuja, at a news briefing, following media reports that the government was not doing anything to prevent the looming danger posed by the lake.

Sometime ago, I did write on the Lake Nyos impending breakdown titled: “How prepared is Nigeria to tackle the looming danger?” and I was inundated with text messages mainly from Taraba, Benue, Cross Rivers and Akwa Ibom states asking individually what they should do.

The proposed Kafin Zaki Dam will boost sugar cane production in Bauchi, Jigawa and Yobe states, an aide of Governor Isa Yuguda of Bauchi state said,yesterday, in Bauchi.

Malam Musa Chibiyayi, the special adviser to the governor on agriculture and food security, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

 

Water, still a scarce commodity in South East - Survey

Potable water remains a leading scarce commodity in the south eastern part of Nigeria, according to a survey by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)
The zone comprises Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo states.  The survey also reveals that some of the pipes being used in some of the states are as old as 50 years, compromising the purity of water as well as the health of people in the area.
