Plea bargain: A way to defeat justice?

With the ridiculously short sentence of only six months in jail, to be spent in a posh Lagos hospital, passed on former Oceanic Bank boss, Mrs. Cecilia Ibru, who had been convicted by a Federal High Court about a fortnight ago, and newspaper reports that all the other sacked bank chiefs now standing trial will also, like the former, enter into a plea bargain with the prosecution, it has now become obvious that plea bargain is fast becoming the in - thing in our justice system.

 

Babatunde Fafunwa (1923-2010)

The history of education planning in Nigeria will not be complete without a mention of the huge contributions of foremost educationist and one-time Minister of Education, Prof. Babatunde Aliu Fafunwa, who died on the 11th of October, 2010, in Abuja. He literally gave his life to the development of the education sector. At the time of his death, he had been billed to receive an honorary doctorate degree from the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), a recognition that would have added to a handsome collection of accolades already garnered by the erudite professor.

 

Stop Borno’s mindless killings

Borno state is in the news for the umpteenth time, this year, over the unrelenting criminal activities of gunmen suspected to be members of the outlawed religious sect known as Boko Haram.  It is alleged to be behind the 12 mysterious deaths reported so far, including police officers. What Peoples Daily finds worrisome is the impunity with which the criminals operate. As soon as they kill their victim they vanish into thin air, without a trace.
