Lessons from Chile mine disaster

It was a happy ending; all 33 miners trapped in San Jose mine for 69 days were finally rescued.  It was a victory for Chile’s ruling class, families of miners, the working people and humanity.  The death of one person decreases humanity said Prophet Mohammed.  Mining is a risky occupation and fatality has been high worldwide.

When I arrived at the NUJ Press Centre, Jalingo, a couple of journalists were already seated, listening to the address of Atiku Dan Shetima, Taraba State Coordinator of Goodluck-Namadi Presidential Movement. The arguments were carefully marshalled to justify his choice. I saw through the prism of the support sycophancy which has become a characterization of the Nigerian elite which gangrene has also affected the ordinary people.

 

A week of chaos and blood

If there was ever a doubt that something fundamental is wrong with this country, the headlines of Nigerian dailies this week removed it completely. While the president was defending the group that claimed responsibility for the anniversary bomb salute; a faction of the group further indicted him that he was only trying to rope in innocent northerners. Another faction of the group visited him and claimed ignorance of the blasts on behalf of the group. His political opponents asked him to resign, citing incompetence.
