Niger junta confirms it crushed coup attempt

Niger’s military government confirmed late on Thursday that it had put down a coup attempt earlier this month but said the transition to civilian rule would go ahead as planned.

Deadly cholera outbreak hits Haiti

A suspected outbreak of cholera has killed at least 135 people in central Haiti, officials have said. The director-general of the health department, Dr Gabriel Thimote, said he was awaiting laboratory test results to confirm cholera was the cause. The victims suffered diarrhoea, acute fever and vomiting. More than 1,500 people were infected, officials said.

 

AU asks UN for Somalia blockade

Ban Ki-moon, the UN Secretary-General, urged the council to take “bold and courageous decisions.”  The African Union (AU) has asked the United Nations Security Council to approve a no-fly zone and naval blockade of Somalia. Ramtane Lamamra, the AU’s commissioner for peace and security, said the move would deter pirates operating off the country’s coast and prevent fighters and shipments from reaching the al-Qaeda linked al-Shabab group, and other groups fighting to topple the largely powerless UN-backed government.

 

French workers vow to step up pension protests

French workers will step up their protests against pension reforms next week, a top trade union leader says. ernard Thibault, head of the CGT workers’ confederation, made the statement as union leaders prepared to discuss plans to hold a seventh day of national protests across France.

 

Belgian skydiver who killed love rival given 30 years

A Belgian woman convicted of murdering her fellow skydiver and love rival by sabotaging her parachute has been jailed for 30 years. Els Clottemans, 26, had been convicted after a four-week trial in the north-eastern Flemish town of Tongeren.

 

Iran and Venezuela deepen ‘strategic alliance’

The two leaders refer to each other as brothers The presidents of Iran and Venezuela have promised to deepen their “strategic alliance” against US “imperialism”. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez met Iran’s Mahmoud Ahmadinejad during a two-day visit to Iran.

 

India malaria deaths hugely underestimated, says report

The number of people dying from malaria in India has been hugely underestimated, according to new research. The data, published in the Lancet, suggests there are 13 times more malaria deaths in India than the World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates.

 

Cuba dissident Farinas awarded Sakharov Prize by EU

Mr Farinas spent four months on hunger strike this year The European Parliament has awarded its Sakharov human rights prize to Cuban dissident Guillermo Farinas. In July Mr Farinas, 48, ended a hunger strike after Cuba’s communist government announced it was freeing 52 political prisoners.
