Flood sacks Ido Sarki village along Airport road

By Abdul Jelil Adebayo

A recent downpour has left Ido Sarki, a village along the Airport road, ransacked by the flood, leaving the residents seeking refuge in a neighbouring settlement.
Director of Urban Affairs, Abuja Metropolitan Management Council, AMMC, Dr. Daniel Abin, said that the flood sacked the village and destroyed the farmlands, putting the villagers at the mercies of their neighbours.
He spoke at the end of this year's Flood Awareness Campaign, saying the department has been able to identify that all communities located on both sides of the Gurara and Wuye rivers are under threat by flooding. "Buildings, life and property especially farmlands are at risk," he said.
He attributed the flooding situation to inadequate urban waste management, indiscriminate location of buildings and general lack of clearing of the river channels passing through such settlements.
He said the one week awareness campaign took the department to the six area councils in the FCT adding that the stories are the same in the villages visited as villagers complained of flood revamping farmlands.
He said in Pandegi and Rimba villages in Abaji area council, the villagers complained of frequency and serenity of rains in their localities, this year. While in Kwali area council, Dangara and Gwadabi villages are erosion and flood prone.
As for Gwagwalada, Dr. Abin said the abattoir end of the town is prone to flooding because of poor refuse management. At Bwari, he said his department found out that the Law school axis of the town; Dutsen Makaranta and Kubura are villages that are regular recipient to flood.
He said in AMAC, Gwagwa, Ido Sarki, Nyanya are villages that are victims of the raining season and Ido Sarki has already been sacked by flood.
