It was a show of shame yesterday at Peace Park, a recreational centre, beside the Abuja International Conference Centre, as two women, Ebere Ezebi and Abada John, threw away decorum and engaged each other in physical combat.
The women, both traders in the park, our reporter who witnessed the incident gathered, had a dispute last month during an event held at the conference centre which was not properly resolved.
This time around the quarrel, apparently sparked-off by the lingering bitterness harboured by the duo from the previous fight, ensued following an argument over a space to spread their wares for sale, which led to Ebere sustaining face injuries.
Recounting what led to the previous quarrel, Ebere, an itinerant food vendor, said she met Abada, bottled water seller at conference centre where she also came to sell her food, last month.
According to her, without any just course, Abada started raining abuses on her to distract her from attending to her customers.
''This woman came to sell as I did, but I don't know why she does not want me here. She called me prostitute and my son bastard. I didn't take it so seriously last month. Honestly, I didn't have it at heart, she saw me today and engaged me in a physical combat,'' she explained.
However, Abada denied the accusation, saying, it was Ebere who first called her prostitute before she reacted.
She said Ebere prompted the fight because she attempted to take over the selling space allocated to her in the park.
''I have neither called her prostitute nor her son bastard. She refused to understand this fact and that was the bottom of the quarrel. I am the mother of many children and it is an indictment on my part to engage myself in a shameful act. She hit me when I felt we were settling the issue,'' she said.
An eye witness, Ogbonna Alex described the action as unfortunate, blaming Ebere for hitting Abada first.
'' It is unfortunate that mature people to have chosen to engage themselves in a fight over a minor issue, this is a minor issue that needed understanding from both sides,'' he said.
