An 18-year-old labourer, Idris Abubakar, was sentenced to four months imprisonment, yesterday, by an Abuja Magistrate's Court, for stealing a vehicle belonging to one Usman Isah.
The Police Prosecutor, Sani Yusuf, told the court on July 26, 2010, that Isah who resides in Utako district of Abuja, had reported to the district police station, that his Golf Car, White in colour with Reg. No XA345 SAN had disappeared from Utako Village, where it was parked at night.
He said: "It was later learnt from investigations that the accused stole the car which he drove recklessly, thereby, resulting into an accident, along Kubwa express way which damaged the car.
Yusuf said the accused admitted that he committed the crime which contravened section 287 of the penal code, during police interrogation.
The accused pleaded guilty before the court and was consequently, sentenced to four months imprisonment by Magistrate Bashir Alkali, without an option of fine.
He is also to pay N55, 000 as compensation to the nominal complainant or serve another two months imprisonment.
In a related development, a Dry Cleaner, Hassan Ayuba, was sentenced to one month imprisonment for cheating, contrary to section 322 of the penal code.
The First Information Report (FIR) stated that on July 26, 2010, one Alhaji Danlami of Kado Kuchi, Abuja, reported to the station that the accused duped him of the sum of N25, 000.
According to the police report, the accused deceived the complainant into believing that he owned a one bedroom apartment at Utako, which the complainant paid the sum, for a year's rent.
The accused however, converted the money to his personal use.
He was sentenced to one month imprisonment by Magistrate Aminu Abdullahi, with an option of N3, 000 fines.
