Maigari denies government is meddling in football matters

By Patrick Andrew

The interim president of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Alhaji Aminu Maigari has debunked allegations that the Federal Government through the National Sports Commission has been interfering in the day-to-day administration of football in the country.
Speaking at the reception organized for the Falconets at the Presidential Villa Abuja, Tuesday night Maigari said the NFF has been receiving tremendous support from the Government and has nothing to complain about.
He made the assertion at the reception party organised for the Falconets who won silver at the FIFA U-20 Women World Cup in Germany and dismissed media reports that government was meddling in the administration of the game by directing states FAs to dissolve the boards of the various associations.
“Contrary to assertions and impression in some quarters, the Government has not been meddling in the day-to-day running of Nigeria football. Instead, what we have been receiving is support, co-operation and valuable advice where necessary.
“We wish to assure the Government that we have nothing to complain about. We are in close collaboration with Government on all matters and this is good for the overall benefit of the game.’’
Maigari also commend the First Lady for her support which, he said, helped the team to become the first Africa team to play in the final of a FIFA organized football championship.
“The First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, has remained a Pillar of strength to the team.I must also express our immense gratitude to her for accepting the Investiture as Grand Matron of National Women Football Teams.  This further underscores Her Excellency’s huge commitment to, and love of the game of football, and by extention, the Nigerian youth.’’
He also commended Hajiya Amina Sambo, wife of the Vice President and the Honourable Minister/Chairman, NSC, Alhaji Ibrahim Isa Bio as well as the director general of the commission, Dr. Patrick Ekeji for the manner they have managed sports in the country.
