As promised, FIFA have shown a gesture of sympathy to the victims of the deadly stampede of March 29, 2009 at the Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium during a World Cup qualifying match between Cote D’Ivoire and Malawi.
At the headquarters of the FIF (Ivorian football federation) on Tuesday the solemn ceremony, graced by FIF president Jacques Anoma, officials of the CNSE (Elephants Supporters Committee) and Mr Kabla Sampson, head of the FIFA football development programme in West Africa, brought together families of the 20 people killed in the stampede, the 139 injured and the only disabled victim. The total amount paid out was $150,000 (N150million).
In a message of compassion addressed to the victims, Mr Kabla said: “FIFA have come in the spirit of solidarity to share the pains with your families for what happened that sad day to you all, to Cote D’Ivoire and the world’s football at large.”
A total amount of 75 million francs CFA ($150,000) was handed to the victims. Each family of the deceased is entitled to 3 million francs ($6,000), while those with minor injuries received 750,000 francs ($1,500). The only disabled victim got 2.5 million francs ($5,000) with a promise of 10 million francs ($20,000) from the Asian Football Confederation.
Mr Anoma thanked FIFA for their kindness and urged the victims to move on with their lives with a greater hope of better things to come.
