Nigeria is today counted               among failed states. Early            in his tenure, President Obama was said to privately dismiss the country as a failed state, an assessment that prompted his preference for Ghana as the venue to declare his short but eloquent prescription for the largely failed African continent: “Africa needs strong institutions, not strong leaders.”

The ongoing military activity in Borno state of Nigeria is evidently a voyage to history that many would think is a new experience to the heartland of the old Kanem Borno Empire.  But Borno was once ruled by a ruthless dictator, Rabeh Az-Zubyr under whose horrible rule, that Kingdom was called the Rifle Empire.

Whatever happened to the candid camera?      
I knew that photo-journalism lost its eagle-eyed flavour and a firm grip on society when I saw the front-pages on Thursday last week, and not one newspaper had the picture of the Secretary to the Federal Government, SGF, Anyim Pius Anyim who slept through much of an event at which he represented the President, Dr. Jonathan Goodluck. It is a sorry state of affairs if the nation’s youngest ever SGF, seems incapable of putting up with the stresses of the office so soon after taking up the post.

 

Governors biting more than they can chew

A prosperous looking traveler tried to rig the security screening queue at the local wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport, Abuja. It was a Friday and as usual, the Airport was full of people traveling for the weekend. From the rear end of the line, another man shouted at the rigger in a baritone, “Governor! Governor!! Please respect yourself!!!”

Let’s take a look at the bombastic rhetoric of government officials who race with their tongues like the jockeys do on the race course.
A man approached the Holy Prophet to ask for the quickest way to salvation. Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) asked  him to do three things. One, he should control his tongue. “Be the master of your tongue. The tongue can get you into trouble”. Two, he should leave home only when necessary and three, he should cry over his sins.
